These numbers have remained stable, with modest year-over-year increases, for approximately five years. The story they tell is clear: consumers say they care about privacy, want control over their data, distrust the companies that collect it, and are willing to pay for alternatives.
The Behavioral Data: What People Do
The behavioral data tells a different story. Not an opposite story – the privacy paradox is not a binary contradiction – but a complicated one that requires careful interpretation.
Free service adoption remains dominant. Google’s free products (Gmail, Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube) serve approximately 4.3 billion users.
